Lake County Established 1870; named in honor of Reelfoot Lake. This was formed by earth movements in a series of earthquakes in 1811, which dammed Reelfoot River and caused some changes in the course of the Mississippi. Missouri First settlement was by French pioneers at Ste. Genevieve in 1735. A trading post was established at St. Louis in 1764, when the territory had been ceded to Spain by France. Returned to France in 1803, it was sold to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase, became a territory in 1812, and the 18th state in the Union in 1821. Erected by Tennessee Historical Commission.
