Johnson County Established 1836; named in honor of Thomas Johnson, of Carter County, one of the early settlers on the Doe River and a prominent citizen of the county. North Carolina One of the original 13 colonies, named reportedly for England's Charles II. Virginia Dare, first white child born in English colonies in North America, was born in the lost colony August 18, 1587. The first permanent settlement was made at mouth of Cape Fear River in 1660. Erected by Tennessee Historical Commission.
