The home of James D. Porter, Tennessee Governor 1875-79, was designed by and built for Thomas Wall Crawford in 1848, later owned by the Dunlap family, and inherited by Porter's wife, Susanna, in 1887. After many years of public service, Porter died here in 1912. Due to the crowd of mourners, his funeral was held on the grounds, then comprising many acres.
