2 miles southeast, this town was established in 1824 by William D. Carrington, who built there a hotel and distillery. At one time it had as many saloons as stores and was a noted gambling resort. It also had an excellent racetrack. It was virtually abandoned following the Civil War, which reduced most of its sporting patrons to penury. Erected by Tennessee Historical Commission.
