4 1/2 miles north. A charter for a ferry at this place was issued to James F. McMahon in 1821. In 1830 the charter was renewed to John White & Elisha Bryant and the town was called White's Landing. In 1849 it was renamed in honor of the decisive battle in the Mexican War.
