8 miles S. There, Albert Sidney Johnston's Army of the Mississippi, marching north from its base at Corinth, attacked and partly overran U.S. Grant's Federal Army of the Tennessee, which had come south by the river with mission of destroying the Confederate base. Arrival by road of Buell's Army of the Ohio and its entrance into the second day's fighting neutralized initial Confederate successes and forced withdrawal to Corinth.
