At Brown's Ferry, 1.5 miles SW, Hazen's Brigade of Brig. Gen. W.E Smith's Federal task force took the heights on the west bank of the river in an amphibious surprise attack. Reinforced by Turchin's Brigade, moving overland from Chattanooga, they laid a pontoon bridge which opened a river supply route to the Federal base at Bridgeport, Alabama.
