In April 1862, Swim's jail, a small building at Fifth and Lookout Streets, was used to hold the captured James Andrews and 21 fellow Union raiders. Their great locomotive chase northward from, Marietta, Georgia, resulted in the execution of eight raiders and the award of the first Congressional Medals of Honor to six of the survivors. Later, thirteen other raiders were awarded Medals of Honor for their participation in this daring exploit.
