Chattanooga Creek runs nearby. Near its mouth, on Tennessee River, was a Cherokee village of the same name, probably on the site of an earlier Creek village. Both creek and village were called Chatunuga, as early records spell it, from the name given Lookout Mountain by the Creeks. The word means rock which comes to an end.
