In 1896, the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club was founded by several men who were introduced to golf in the North and in Britain. The oldest course at its original site in Tennessee, it was formed only eight years after the opening of the first club in the United States. The Chattanooga club was responsible for the 1902 formation of the Southern Golf Association and has hosted many significant amateur tournaments, including the 1920 Southern Amateur won by Bobby Jones.
