Booker T. Washington State Park was one of the state's first parks. In 1938, the site was leased from the 1'ennessee Valley Authority. It was deeded to the State of Tennessee in 1950. During the days of de jure racial segregation, this park was set aside for Negro citizens of Hamilton County. It was named in honor of Booker T. Washington, founder and former president of Tuskegee Institute.
