Established by Thomas Talbot, in 1804, the inn which stood here was later known as the City Hotel. The trustees of Cum-berland College, later the University of Nashville, habitually met here. A dinner was given here for Aaron Burr in 1806. Here, in 1813, was the fight between Jesse and Thomas H. Benton, and Generals Jackson and Coffee. Jesse Benton and Jackson were wounded, the latter seriously.
