The house which formerly stood here was headquarters for a succession of commanders following occupation of Nashville by Federal forces in 1862. These included Major Generals Don Carlos Buell, William S. Rosecrans, Ulysses S. Grant and George H. Thomas. Chief of Staff to Rosecrans was Brig. Gen. James A. Garfield .
