Founded at Tennessee A&I State College, November 26, 1937, to give more recognition to talented Negro scholars. The first meeting was called by Dr. George W. Gore, Jr., Dean and sponsor of the local honor society. AKM now has 76 chapters nationally and has held membership in the Association of College Honor Societies since 1952.
