Chartered Feb. 12, 1897, as memorial to Abraham Lincoln. Among organizers were Maj. Gen. 0.0. Howard, USA, Capt. RF. Patterson, CSA, and A.A. Myers, Congregational minister. Succeeded Harrow School, established at Cumberland Gap, 1890. College opened 1899 with Dr. John Hale Larry as first President, on site of Four Seasons Hotel.
