Tracing its beginning to the hacienda established by Captain Francisco Valencia along the Camino Real by the mid-17th century, it was abandoned during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, it was resettled in 1740 by Christian Indians called genizaros who were important in the defense of the Spanish frontier.
