The area below these high bluffs, or barancas, was settled by Andres Gomez Robledo in the mid-17th century. His hacienda developed into an important stop along this section of the Camino Real until it was destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. Savinal wasn't resettled until 1741 because of apache raids.
