To the east beyond Caballo Reservoir are the rugged Caballo Mountains, uplifted about 3 miles above the downdropped Rio Grande trough, along the fault scarp at the edge of the mountains. Black ironstone beds are at the base of high cliffs which are formed by Paleozoic dolomites and limestones.
