Listed in the National Register of Historic Places |
(Also known as the "Madrid National Historical District") Madrid is located in the oldest mining region of the Ortiz Mountains. Established about 1892 at the site of Coal Gulch, Madrid grew as a company-owned mining town with its unique Christmas lighting displays during the 1930s. When the mines closed in 1954, Madrid nearly became a ghost town. Madrid Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on November 09, 1977.
