Madrid is located in the oldest mining region of the Ortiz Mountains. Established about 1892 at the site of Coal Gulch, Madrid grew as a company-owned mining town with its unique Christmas lighting displays during the 1930s. When the mines closed in 1954, Madrid nearly became a ghost town.

Madrid Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on November 09, 1977.
