Manuel Martinez of Abiquiú received a large land grant here in 1832, but the Utes interrupted colonization until the 1860s. Tierra Amarilla, first called Nutritas, became the Rio Arriba County seat in 1880. In 1967, there were conflicts between National Guardsmen and land rights activist Reies López Tijerina.La Tierra Amarilla MRA Tierra Amarilla Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on September 29, 1986.
