This valley has been a natural route between the upper Rio Grande and the eastern plains since prehistoric times. Pueblo, Comanche and Jicarilla Apache bands and, later, Spanish and Mexican traders used this route to trade, hunt or raide. The valley was permanently settled before 1818.
