Carsbad was originally named Eddy after Charles B. Eddy, pioneer cattleman and promoter, but was later renamed for the famous European resort. In 1590 the expedition of Gaspar Castaño de Sosa's followed this part of the Pecos River, which in the 19th century had become the center of a vast cattle empire.
