Established in 1862 to guard the Navaho and Apaches on the Bosque Redondo Reservation. Discontinued as a military post in 1868. Buildings and site sold to Lucien B. Maxwell. Billy the Kid was killed here by Sheriff Pat Garrett on July 14, 1881 and is buried in the nearby cemetery.
