Legend describes Acoma, occupied since at least the 13th century, as a "place that always was." Located on a mesa for defensive purposes, settled by inhabitants of nearby abandoned pueblos, and nearly destroyed by the Spanish in 1599. Acoma was reestablished by ancestors of its present occupants.
