Remote though it may appear, this desert valley has seen a lot of history. Captain Simpson, one of the great government explorers, surveyed a wagon trail south of here in 1859, shorter than the older Humboldt Trail by some 200 miles. One mile north of here are the remains of Sand Springs Pony Express station which was involved in the Indian trouble of the 1860's. Also within view are the flats where salt was mined in the 1870's, the route of the first transcontinental telegraph, and the road to Wonder, Fairview and other important camps. Dominating the entire scene is Sand Mountain's famous profile.
