According to traditional accounts, Toby Tubby was the last Chickasaw chief in this area. A prosperous landowner, he operated a ferry across the Tallahatchie River on the stage road to Memphis until his death ca. 1835. He was buried on a mound about 1 1/4 miles north of this site on the banks of the creek that bears his name.

StoppingPoints.com Editorial on The Lyceum: | (Marker near College Hill Church keeps disappearing.) The Oxford-Lafayette County Heritage Foundation spells the Chickasaw chief's name as Tobby Tubby, whereas the historical marker's spelling is Toby Tubby. |
