Here, in 1699, priests of the Seminary of Quebec founded the Mission of the Holy Family. Around it developed the village of Cahokia, the first permanent white settlement in Illinois. For more than a century Cahokia prospered, but about 1815 decline commenced, and the village gradually yielded its ancient importance.
