Terrence and Carrie Weaver Meche built this structure as a small farmhouse in 1884 using materials shipped in from Pensacola, Florida. The Meche family abandoned the house well before the devastating 1900 storm. William D. and Ruth McLean Gordon purchased the house in 1905, naming it The Breakers. The Gordons used the house as their vacation home for man yyears, making renovations and additions in 1914 and in the 1930s. A familiar local landmark, The Breakers has survived numerous severe Gulf storms and hurricanes, but has had to be moved back from the Gulf because of beach erosion. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1998
