On homesite of Dr. Counsel David Oates (1851 - 1889), who had large local practice and built this school in 1870s for his family and neighbors. (Also here at his home he grew herbs, dispensed later from saddlebags as he made calls by horseback.) On wooden benches, and about the stove in winter, pupils read aloud, spelled down classmates, recited multiplication tables -- in general shared work and play. The school closed in 1905.
