Born Connecticut, 1795 — Died New York, 1878 — Businessman — Entrepreneur — Philanthropist

Established steamship line in Gulf of Mexico in 1837; Began in 1858 use of settlement on Berwick Bay as transshipping point for rail-steamer service from New Orleans to Texas: Purchased New Orleans, Opelousas and Great Western Railroad in 1869. Dredged Atchafalaya Bay Ship Channel in 1872. His enterprises brought growth and prosperity to the Town of Brashear which, in 1876, was renamed Morgan City in his honor.
