On October 25, 1769, under Gen. O'Reilly, Spanish Governor of Louisiana, were executed French patriots and martyrs: de LaFreniere, Marquis, Noyan, Caresse, Milhet, Villere having died previously.

A letter dated 1984 in this marker's file at the Louisiana Archives outlines a complaint by Spanish Consulate requesting that the marker text be reworded, as the reference to Spanish cruelty during the Colonial Period was objectionable to them.
